When Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman made her first appearance in "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice," she was this confident, self-assured woman "coming out of retirement" as a superhero.
However, Gadot's character wasn't always that way. In her standalone movie in 2017, fans will see a different side to her character -- one who has light moments and cracks jokes, and one who even falls in love.
"In 'Batman v Superman,' you get a glimpse of who she is but not where she comes from. In 'Wonder Woman,' this would be the first time we ever tell the coming-of-age story of how Diana [Prince] becomes Wonder Woman," Gadot told Digital Spy.
"We go back 100 years to when she's more naïve," she continued. "She's this young idealist. She's pure. Very different to the experienced, super-confident, grown-up woman you've seen."
Gadot added that the movie, which will be directed by Patty Jenkins, is very interesting because it has equal parts humor and dark themes.
Both Gadot and producer Deborah Snyder have high praises for the director, and they believe that she will do the superhero proud.
"She's a genius," Gadot told Variety of Jenkins. "I think it was a smart move [to get her as director]. I think women understand women the best. And Patty has such a great vision; she knew exactly how she wanted to tell our story. She's all about the heart, and I think that Wonder Woman is all about the heart as well."
Meanwhile, Snyder told Forbes that Jenkins will be "the first female director of a big studio tentpole action film like this." She also said that it's important for them not just to deliver strong female characters on the big screen, but also to give equal opportunities for female directors.
"Wonder Woman" will make its way to cinemas on June 2, 2017.
