Theo James' character Four in the "Divergent" series has several tattoos on his back. It is very symbolic for Dauntless faction members to get tattoos, and for Four, he wanted something to represent his many abilities.
Aside from having the Dauntless symbol on his back, he also got Amity, Abnegation, Candor and Erudite because he "doesn't just want to be one thing."
James told Marie Claire that he doesn't have tattoos in real life, but seriously considered getting one at some point in his life. But now, the actor decided against it.
"I always thought that I would get one but, actually, now I'm kind of OK with not having any. I'm just not sure they would suit me," he admitted.
For the film series, it would take the make-up crew three hours just to complete putting on Four's elaborate tattoos. James has to remain standing during the entire process.
"Theo's back tattoo was about 40 separate pieces," his make-up artist Brad Wilder earlier told Pret-a-Reporter. "We'd start at the top and work our way down from over his shoulder to the center of his back."
The elaborate application of temporary tattoos is difficult enough, but James said that his training regimen to get Four's body is even more complicated.
"I generally try to keep myself fit, but my character has to look a certain way, so I have to step it up a notch," he said. "It's difficult, either because there's only a short period of time to do it in, or because I'll be doing another movie where I'm not supposed to look like that. Basically, you have to work really hard and force yourself to eat a lot. I'm not a fan of the gym, but weight training is the quickest way to put on the pounds."
The next film in the "Divergent" series, "Ascendant," will be released on June 9, 2017.
