If you're a fan of "Black Sails," then you know a beloved character was tragically killed toward the end of the third season.

**WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD**

In the penultimate episode, pirate captain Charles Vane was sentenced to death by hanging, and many fans were shocked at his fate.

If you're a fan of "Black Sails," then check out our list of the three reasons why we are shocked that Vane died in the third season.

3. He Was A Fascinating Character

At first glance, Charles Vane seemed like a typical ne'er-do-well pirate who cared for nothing and no one but himself. However, over the past three seasons, Vane showed that he was actually a complex character with many layers.

From his doomed love with Eleanor Guthrie to his relationship with the legendary pirate captain Edward "Blackbeard" Teach, Vane was a fascinating character to watch onscreen, and it is a shame to see him go.

2. It Would Have Been An Interesting Twist If Vane Was Rescued

Digital Spy pointed out that in real life, Charles Vane was also sentenced to death in 1721, but since the show is a prequel to Robert Louis Stevenson's famous novel "Treasure Island," the executive producers did not need to stick to the historical record.

It would have been a great twist if Charles Vane was saved from being executed at that last moment by one of his fellow pirates at the end of "Black Sails" season three.

1. Vane Died With Many Regrets

McGowan admitted to Digital Spy that he thinks that Vane died with many regrets.

"I think that Vane had a lot of regrets," the actor said. "I think that what he regrets most is that he wasn't able to find a life for himself, or a family. I think his greatest regret is that he died without leaving much behind other than the rebellion."

It would have been a much more compelling storyline if Vane was saved from death and his experience forced him to live life to the fullest by falling in love or leaving a bigger mark upon the world aside from the rebellion.

"Black Sails" fans, are you disappointed that Charles Vane was killed? Vote in our poll below and let us know your thoughts.
