"The Vampire Diaries" star Ian Somerhalder recently confirmed at a convention that was held in Nashville on Saturday that the show is going to end after season eight.

Entertainment Weekly reported that Somerhalder appeared at the Walker Stalker convention in Nashville, Tennessee on Saturday and admitted "The Vampire Diaries" season eight will be the final season.

"We have decided to do one last season to really do the story justice," he explained. "My role is shifting on the show and we have a lot to do, basically."

However, Entertainment Weekly reached out to the CW to confirm if what Somerhalder said was true and a spokesperson revealed that the network has not made any decisions regarding the show's future.

Previously, US Weekly mentioned that Somerhalder's co-star Kat Graham announced that she would be leaving "The Vampire Diaries" after season eight.

"Season eight will be my last season," she explained. "I just hope that whatever I do after, the crew can come with me. If the crew can come with me, then we'll be good. The crew is going to be the hardest thing to let go, because we are a family."

E!Online speculated that Somerhalder might want to leave the show after season eight and that could be why he said "The Vampire Diaries" will not live to see a ninth season at the Walker Stalker convention.

After all, "The Vampire Diaries" executive producer Julie Plec previously admitted in January that the show would go on as long as Somerhalder and his co-star Paul Wesley wanted to return.

"I finally realized that my destiny on this show, creatively, is tied to Ian Somerhalder and Paul Wesley," she explained. "And I mean that in a good way. As long as those boys who I now consider friends want to keep telling the story, then I won't walk away from telling the story."

"The Vampire Diaries" is currently airing on Friday nights at 8 p.m. ET on the CW.
